Why Maha Shivratri is celebrated every year in month of February or March?

Maha shivratri is devoted to celebration of the union of bhagwan Shiva and maa parvati (marriage of Shiv and Shakti). Every year it falls on chaturdashi tithi of krishna paksha of falgun according to hindu calendar i.e, on the 14th (fourteenth) day of decreasing moon. on the eve of new moon , marking the moonless night of the year. it takes place annually in the month of february or march . This year in 2024 maha shivratri is honored on March 8th which is on Friday.

The Chaturdashi Tithi commences at 09:57 pm on March 8, 2024, concluding at 06:17 pm on March 9, 2024. The Nishita Kaal Puja is scheduled from 2:07 am to 12:56 am on March 9, 2024, while the Shivaratri Parana is observed from 06:37 am to 03:29 am.

Guidelines for event of Maha Shivratri :

  • Shake off sleep before brahma muhurta, on time. so that there should be sufficient time to perform pooja archana of Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati.
  • Prepare yourself for the day’s rituals by purifying your body with a cold water shower.
  • Adhere to custom by donning white attire which symbolizes purity.
  • During the course of the day chant mantras, listen to Shiv Tandav Strotam it gives Enormous strength, mental strength.
  • If possible, consider visiting a Shiva temple to partake in prayers and rituals. Or else you can conduct a puja in the comfort of your home.
  • Choosing to fast (vrat) is ones individual decision and there is no obligation to adhere to a full fast. Pay attention to your body and opt for the fasting level that best suits your physical health.
  • If you chose to fast on the auspicious event of maha shivratri which is considered as a one of the most important festivals of Hindus. Maintain hydration by intaking liquids ,it’s essential to consume an ample amount of water, coconut water, or herbal teas to prevent dehydration.
  • If you underwent a complete fast, refrain from consuming heavy meals when breaking your fast. Choose a light and easily digestible meal instead.
