The Chennai Super Kings (CSK) made the decision on Thursday to name Ruturaj Gaikwad the team’s captain in place of the legendary cricketer Mahendra Sigh Dhoni, ahead of the Indian Premier League (IPL) season opening.
Before the TATA IPL 2024 season begins, MS Dhoni has given Ruturaj Gaikwad the captaincy of the Chennai Super Kings. Ruturaj has been a key member of the Chennai Super Kings since 2019 and has participated in 52 IPL games during that time, the team announced on its website.
In the IPL, Gaikwad has a stellar record. After making his CSK debut in 2020, he played 52 games for the five-time IPL champions. Gaikwad amassed 590 runs at a remarkable strike rate of 147.50 in 16 games in 2023. In addition, Gaikwad represented India in six ODIs and nineteen T20 matches.
The Chennai Super Kings, led by Mahendra Singh Dhoni, won the IPL title five times, tying a record held by the Mumbai Indians until 2023. In 2010, 2011, 2018, 2021, and 2023, MS Dhoni guided CSK to three IPL championships. In 2010 and 2014, Dhoni guided CSK to two CLT20 championships.
In addition, MS Dhoni is regarded as the most successful captain in Indian cricket history. India won the 2013 ICC Champions Trophy, the 2011 ICC Cricket World Cup, and the 2007 ICC T20 World Cup under his direction.
